CAPE TOWN– School learners across the Western Cape can participate in the Cape Town Cycle Tour free of charge, with 500 entries available for the 42km race on Sunday 8 March.
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, in partnership with the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, will allocate the entries on a first-come, first-served basis to learners aged 11 to 18, or those turning 11 this year.
Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, said the initiative aims to expand access to sport and create opportunities for young people across the province.
“This is your chance to be part of something big, to challenge yourself and represent your school with pride in one of the world’s most iconic cycling races,” he said.
Mackenzie, who will also participate in this year’s race, has called on principals and teachers to identify promising young cyclists and ensure their entries are submitted on time.
Parents and schools must submit learner entries directly to the department by emailing Amy.Sauls@westerncape.gov.za by Wednesday 25 February.
The first 500 entries received will be allocated the free spots.
“We can’t wait to see our young people on that start line. Let’s ride, Western Cape!” Mackenzie said.
