Anthem energises Gamma B main transmission substation to unlock 420 MW Northern Cape wind capacity – Green Building Africa

  • 420 MW of contracted wind capacity to be connected to the national grid.
  • 500 MVA 400 kV and 132 kV substation infrastructure delivered for NTCSA.
  • Anthem portfolio exceeds 2.7 GW with more than 12.5% market share.

Anthem has energised the Gamma B Main Transmission Substation, a strategic grid infrastructure project that will connect its Northern Cluster wind developments to South Africa’s national transmission network.

The substation was delivered over a 20 month construction period on behalf of the National Transmission Company South Africa, a subsidiary of Eskom. The facility incorporates 400 kV and 132 kV infrastructure, a 500 MVA transformer and capacity for future grid connections.

Located on the border of the Northern Cape and Western Cape between Victoria West and Murraysburg, the substation will evacuate power generated by the Umsinde, Khangela and Ishwati Emoyeni wind farms. The three projects, currently under construction, represent 420 MW of contracted capacity.

Power purchase agreements have been signed with industrial off-takers including Sibanye-Stillwater, Richards Bay Minerals and NOA Group Trading. Electricity generated by the wind farms will be fed into the national grid and delivered to clients through a wheeling mechanism. Full commissioning is scheduled for Q4 2026.

The energisation of Gamma B marks the completion of the primary delivery phase of the transmission asset, with final construction activities and grid connection of the wind farms to follow.

Anthem was formed through the integration of African Clean Energy Developments and Energy Infrastructure Management Services Africa, with majority backing from African Infrastructure Investment Managers and the AIIM managed IDEAS Fund. Officially launched in September 2025, the company manages a secured portfolio of more than 2.7 GW across South Africa, spanning renewable generation, operational services and industrial power supply contracts.

With 24 projects across five provinces and Eswatini and a market share exceeding 12.5%, Anthem is positioning itself as one of South Africa’s largest independent power producers at a time when the country is accelerating the diversification of an electricity mix still largely dominated by coal.
