Thursday weather: Severe thunderstorm warning for seven counties and return of cooler weather

From Friday it should be partly cloudy and warm to cool, with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms possible in the central and eastern regions of the country.

SA Weather Service warnings for Thursday:

A. warning level 2 for heavy thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and lightning causing localized damage to infrastructure, settlements (informal), property, vehicles, livelihoods, agricultural production and livestock, localized flooding of sensitive roads, low lying areas and bridges, minor vehicle accidents, localized injuries due to flying debris are expected over North West, Gauteng, most parts of the Free State, Highveld of Mpumalanga, southwestern Limpopo, northeastern part of the Northern Cape, and extreme western parts from KwaZulu-Natal.

b. level 1 warning for damaging winds Problems with navigation at sea and small vessels at risk of taking on water and capsizing on site are expected between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas from this evening until Friday afternoon.

Morning fog patches in the south, otherwise cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thunderstorms.

MPUMALANGA
Morning fog patches, otherwise cloudy and cool to warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread across the western Highveld.

LIMPOPO
Cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the Lowveld and Limpopo Valley.

NORTHWEST
Cloudy in the east with morning fog patches, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thunderstorms.

THE FREE STATE
Cloudy with morning fog patches in the east, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms, but widespread in the far east.

THE NORTHERN CAPE
Morning fog patches in the south and along the coast, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms in the east. It will be cool in some places. The wind along the coast is moderate to fresh from the south.

THE WESTERN CAPE
Partly cloudy and warm to hot, but cloudy and cool in southern parts with a chance of light morning rain. Along the coast the wind blows fresh to strong from a southerly to south-easterly direction.

THE WESTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Cloudy and cool with isolated to scattered showers and rain, except in the north where it will be partly cloudy. The wind along the coast is moderate to fresh from a southeasterly direction.

THE EASTERN HALF OF THE EASTERN CAPE
Morning fog in the north, otherwise cloudy and cold with here and there a shower and rain. Isolated thunderstorms are expected in the northeast. The wind along the coast is moderate from a southeasterly direction.

KWAZULU-NATAL
Morning fog patches over the interior, otherwise cloudy and cold to cool with scattered rain and thunderstorms. Along the coast the wind blows moderately from an easterly to south-eastern direction.
