Free State University distances itself from ‘anti-men’ slogans seen at GBV protests

The University of the Free State (UFS) has distanced itself from a social media post in which students displayed protest signs with offensive messages aimed at men.

In a statement, the university said it “unequivocally dissociates itself from the statements and messages contained in a recently circulated social media post showing individuals holding protest signs with offensive and inflammatory language directed against men.

“The views do not reflect the values, ethos or institutional position of the university.”

The response came after a short demonstration on November 21, when the institution protested against gender-based violence for 15 minutes in solidarity with the Women for Change G20 Women’s Shutdown.

The university said it remains committed to creating a safe and respectful environment.

“The university remains firmly committed to fostering an inclusive and respectful environment for all members of its community.”
