Violence at University of the Free State ‘unacceptable’, says Manamela

The university has now decided to temporarily close its campuses until further notice.

Manamela described the incident as deeply concerning and said the safety and security of students, staff and property must remain the top priority.

“The violence that resulted in serious injuries is deeply regrettable and completely unacceptable.

“While we recognize the right to protest, it must remain peaceful and within the dictates of the law. The destruction of infrastructure and violence against people and property only serves to undermine legitimate concerns and jeopardize the academic future of all students.”

The minister said he had been informed by the university’s leadership and that he remains in direct and ongoing contact with UFS Vice-Chancellor Professor Francis Petersen to closely monitor the situation.

Manamela said his department has been tasked to work with the university to develop contingency plans that will minimize disruption to academic activities and ensure that no student is unfairly disadvantaged by the temporary closure.

“Our main focus is to maintain the 2025 academic year. We will work with all stakeholders to ensure that teaching and learning continues as quickly as possible once calm is restored.”

The minister called on student leaders and all members of the university community to pursue peaceful dialogue instead of destruction.

“We call on all parties to choose the path of constructive engagement over destruction. Violence will not solve any problem; it only deepens the crisis and deprives students of their right to education,” Manamela added.

The Ministry of Higher Education and Training says it will continue to monitor developments at UFS while providing support to both university management and the student community.
