UFS: The policy that prevents students with outstanding debts from registering will not affect those funded by NSFAS

The University of the Free State (UFS) said a policy that says students with outstanding debts cannot be registered for the time being will not affect students funded by the National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

In the past, students have complained that the scheme has been late in paying for registration, but despite this they would be enrolled as soon as they prove they are funded.

The students have rejected the policy which also stipulates that students who owe more than R20,000 to the institution will not be able to register for the 2026 academic year.

University spokesperson Lacea Loader said: “The university exco has invited the student representative councils from all three campuses for continued engagement on the issues that led to the protests.”
