The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow warning for severe thunderstorms over Gauteng, parts of the northwest and the Free State.
Forecasters say conditions are expected to worsen, with the warning likely to be upgraded to level four as damaging winds, hail, heavy rain and frequent lightning strikes.
SAWS Lehlohonolo Thobela said the bad weather could pose a serious risk to infrastructure and public safety.
“This is due to heavy rainfall, but also low lying areas and bridges which may be susceptible to localized flooding. Damage to infrastructure may also be possible due to damaging winds, as well as the possibility of hail in these areas.”
