Over 1,000 zama-zamas arrested in Barberton, Mpumalanga

BARBERTON – More than a thousand illegal miners have been arrested at a mine in Barberton, Mpumalanga.

The arrests are part of Operation Vala Umgodi.

Police says zama zamas were pressured to surface after their work was disrupted.

Authorities say the miners are nationals without valid documentation to be in the country.

Some appear to be underage.

The suspects could possibly be charged for Contravention of the Immigration Act and are expected to appear in court soon.
