The mayor of the Victor Khanye Local Municipality (VKLM), Vusi Buda, expressed his condolences after an accident near Delmas claimed the lives of eight people.
“It is with a heavy heart that I, on behalf of the residents of VKLM, extend my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones,” said Buda.
“Our community stands with you in mourning, and we keep you in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
He also wished the injured a complete recovery and thanked the emergency services and law enforcement agencies for their quick and professional response, which was vital in assisting the injured.
“We are actively collaborating with all relevant authorities to support the affected families and ensure a thorough investigation is conducted,” Buda added.
The accident occurred on August 18 at around 07:15 on the N12 just after the R42 Bronkhorstspruit/Delmas off-ramp. It involved a Hino truck that had been converted to transport passengers.

The vehicle was stationary in the emergency lane, picking up employees to ferry them to a nearby farm, when a Volvo articulated truck crashed into it from behind.
Five of the victims were declared dead at the scene. Several others were transported to hospital, where three later succumbed to their injuries.
The Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, visited the scene on August 19, accompanied by Buda and other officials.
He was also scheduled to visit the families of the deceased. In a media release, Macie urged road users to take responsibility for their actions.
“Despite all efforts that government and its entities continue to put in to reduce road crashes, the number of people losing their lives in these collisions is still rising. It is essential that all road users play their part by being alert while driving and by complying with the rules,” he said.
“More than 80% of collisions on the road are caused by human behaviour, and regrettably, people’s recklessness claims innocent lives.”
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
