The Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, confirmed that all three occupants of the vehicle had passed away, and a case of murder has been opened for each.
He said the motive for the attack is unknown at this stage.
Mkhuhlu Trust has earned the nickname ‘the land of blood’ after more than 25 people were shot and killed there in the past two years, with few of the cases leading to arrests.
Mdhluli said the police currently have no suspects in this most recent shooting, and asked members of the community with information that might be useful to the investigation to call the nearest police station, call the Crime Stop number 08600 1011 or send information via the My SAPS app.
