The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is urging residents and visitors of the Western Cape to prepare for potentially dangerous weather conditions this weekend, as a cold front is set to sweep through the region, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The Level 2 impact-based warnings will be in effect for damaging waves and winds along the coastline starting from midnight on Saturday, 9 August 2025, until 11:59pm on Sunday, 10 August 2025.
Beginning Saturday morning, the system is forecast to bring with it westerly to southwesterly swells of between five and six metres alongside near gale to gale-force winds expected to reach 74kph.
Coastal towns including Cape Town, George, Mossel Bay, Overstrand and Bitou are likely to experience the brunt of these hazardous conditions.

The SAWS has indicated that the potential impacts include:
- Large, unpredictable waves: These waves may pose significant risks to the public, especially those venturing onto coastal rocks.
- Disruptions to port and harbour activities: Expect delays and potential cancellations for shipping-related activities, affecting the supply chain.
- Risk to small vessels: The conditions might put smaller craft at significant risk of capsizing.
- Localised infrastructure damage: Winds and surf could lead to disruptions to beachfront activities and cause minor damage to local structures.
- Sand build-up: Roads in coastal areas, such as Baden Powell Drive in False Bay, may experience sand accumulation, affecting vehicular movement.
In light of these conditions, the SAWS strongly advises that small vessels and personal watercraft like kayaks should stay ashore during this period.
Coastal users are urged to exercise extreme caution and be aware of the risks associated with the sea during the forecasted high swell and winds.
