Winter weather returns to the Cape as Cold fronts merge

Get ready for a fierce winter blast this week. Two cold fronts will merge and bring rain, snow and gale‑force winds from 30 July to 1 August. Facebook Group expert Angelo Ricardo Hoorn of the Severe Weather and Information Centre SA, first flagging this system.

Here’s the very detailed breakdown

A powerful winter system will hit parts of South Africa from Wednesday to Friday. Two cold fronts will merge into one system by Wednesday afternoon. An upper‑air disturbance will boost its intensity.

On Tuesday, bergwinds will push warm to hot air into coastal areas of the Western and Southern Cape. Isolated showers may occur over the western interior. Temperatures could reach the high 20s in coastal towns.

On Wednesday afternoon, the merged front will sweep across the Cape Town metro. Rain will spread into the Cape Winelands and Overberg districts.

Showers may turn heavy in places. Localised thunderstorms could develop late in the day.

Early on Thursday, a second front will make landfall. Widespread rain will continue in the south and south‑east. Snow will fall over the southern high ground of the Northern Cape.

The southwestern Cape mountains will see light to moderate snowfall. High‑lying areas of the northern and north‑eastern Western Cape will also receive snow.

From Thursday into Friday, gale‑force south‑westerly winds will lash the southern coastline. Seas will turn dangerously rough. By Friday, strong winds will reach the East Coast.
