University of Mpumalanga finishes fifth overall at winter sports games | Mpumalanga News

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) participated in the 2025 University Sports South Africa (USSA) Winter Games from June 30 to July 7. The tournament was hosted across four institutions: the University of Pretoria (UP), the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), the University of Cape Town (UCT), and the Nelson Mandela University (NMU).

According to the UMP spokesperson, Tlangelani Ubisi, the teams competed in four sporting codes: rugby, basketball, volleyball and netball. The rugby teams played at the Hillcrest Sports Campus, hosted by UP.

The volleyball teams competed on the indoor courts at UCT, while the netball action took place at NMU in Gqeberha, with matches played over five days. The basketball squads competed at Wits.

Ubisi said that the tournament featured a demanding fixture list, with play-offs and finals played on July 4, followed by the closing ceremony and prize-giving. The C Division was split into two sections. “We had the Super League, which had six teams, and the Premier League, which had 10 teams. UMP finished in fifth position out of 10 teams in the C Division Premier League,” said Ubisi.

Participating institutions included the University of Limpopo (UL), the University of Fort Hare (UFH), the Sol Plaatje University (SPU), the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), the North-West University (NWU), the Exercise Teachers Academy (ETA), Stadio Higher Education, and the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST).
