In a decisive step to tackle the terrible state of municipal administration in the free state, the provincial treasury will use skilled experts in struggling municipalities in the province.
Bloemfontein Courant report The fact that the intervention, announced by Free State MEC of Finance Moses Ketso Makume, comes after growing concern about poor audit outcomes that have been revealed in the latest report of the Auditor General.
Speaking during the first day of the supervisory visit by the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs last Thursday, Makume said that the use of internal experts is intended to strengthen financial and administrative administration where this is most needed.
“We are clearly concerned about the report of the Auditor General, but it is also an opportunity to improve the board in our municipalities so that they can do what is expected of them to provide services to people,” Makume said.
No municipality in the free state received a clean audit in the most recent reporting cycle.
One of the most troubled municipalities, the local municipality of Nala, was selected for his instability after activating with two CFOs and two speakers at the same time. This administrative chaos led to protests for the unrest of the community and recurring services. In response, Amos Goliath has since been appointed as manager to stabilize the institution.
Makume emphasized that trusting of expensive external consultants had not yielded any results, without a municipality that achieved a clean audit despite the financial investment.
“We are going to use internal capacity to help our municipalities and lift it out of this. This approach will authorize local administrations and save money,” he said.
