PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to visit Kimberley on July 25, accompanied by the full National Cabinet, in what is being described as a significant and potentially historic occasion for the Northern Cape.
The visit, announced by Premier Dr Zamani Saul, will see the president and Cabinet members meeting with the Provincial Executive Council, as well as executive mayors from all five district municipalities. The high-level engagement forms part of a national effort to work more closely with provincial and local governments to resolve pressing service delivery issues and accelerate development.
According to the Office of the Premier, the gathering will focus on reviewing programmes being implemented across the province by government departments and municipalities. The discussions are expected to centre on improving inter-governmental co-operation, addressing challenges that hinder progress, and identifying opportunities for inclusive economic growth and job creation.
“The Northern Cape provincial government would be allowed an opportunity to engage the president and Cabinet on the state of the Northern Cape province and its constituent municipalities,” the Premier’s Office confirmed. “Deliberations will focus on inter-governmental support and interventions where it is needed, as well as reflecting on challenges and opportunities that exist for inclusive economic growth, job creation and improving service delivery.”
The Premier’s Office described the visit as “a very important and historic” opportunity for the province, aligning with Section 154 of the Constitution, which mandates national and provincial governments to support and strengthen the capacity of municipalities.
“It is also expected that the Cabinet will engage and propose solutions to the Northern Cape provincial government to be jointly focused on,” the statement added.
Premier Saul expressed confidence that the outcomes of the visit will help set the province “on a progressive developmental trajectory in advancing the vision of a ‘Modern, Growing and Successful Province’ and positioning the province as South Africa’s new growth front.”
Further details about the visit are expected to be released by the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) in the coming days.
