Two dead have been registered in the free state since the start of the winter initiation season, while a joint effort from the Community, the Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee (PICC) and the police have led to saving 21 initiates of an illegal initiation school in Thunissen.
One death was admitted to Bot Shabelo and another in Bethulie. The police are investigating the cases.
The Free State Co-Operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department (Cogta) confirmed that the illegal initiation school has been closed and the insiders reunited with their families.
“One of the initiates was taken to the hospital for medical attention,” said it.
“In Bethulie, two male initiates received medical attention after they had been found with swollen feet. The cause of their situation is still being investigated. In Peace, Thabo Mofutsanyana -District, two cases of missing initials were reported to the police. The initiates are 15 and 27 years old,” said Cogta Spoke passera.
Six criminal cases are open with law enforcement agencies in the province.
