Agricultural department warns against the outbreak of new foot and claw shops in FS

Johannesburg-the Ministry of Agriculture has warned of a new outbreak of foot and claw disease in cattle in the free state.

The first case was confirmed last Thursday on a commercial farm in Kroonstad.

The last outbreak came after five provinces were hit by the same disease earlier in 2025, with KwaZulu-Natal hit hardest.

The farm in Kroonstad that confirmed that a case of foot and mouth disease was immediately placed in quarantine.

The cattle showed signs of lame, drooling with swears on their hooves and mouths.

According to the Department, 270 foot and claw shops were tackled from July, with 249 unsolved.

In June the ministry placed a temporary international trade ban while ordering vaccines.
