Agriculture in the outbreak of foot and mouth disease confirmed in free state

The Ministry of Agriculture hereby informs the public and stakeholders about a new outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in free state.

On July 10, 2025, an FMD outbreak was confirmed on a commercial farm in the local municipality of Moqhaka, located in the Veterinary Area of Kroonstad State. The affected real estate was placed under quarantine on July 8, 2025 and immediate control measures were implemented, including supervision and vaccination. Trace-back activities are underway to determine the source of the infection, while farms in the surrounding radius of 10 km undergo supervision to determine the possible size of the spread.

FMD status outbreaks in all provinces

From July 2025 a total of 270 FMD outbreaks were reported in five provinces in South Africa. Of these, 249 outbreaks remain unsolved, while 21 have undergone a solution. Eastern Cape has registered 40 outbreaks, with 38 still open and two resolved. Since September 2024 there has been no new reported cases in Eastern Cape. Kwazulu-Natal is the most affected province, with 191 reported outbreaks, of which 172 remain active and 19 were resolved. Gauteng has reported 32 outbreaks since May 2025, North West has four open outbreaks, while Mpumalanga has reported three outbreaks.

Correction of Kwazulu-Natal Disease Management Area Notification

The Ministry also wants to correct an error in a GA -Gazette notification that has recently been published (Gazette Notification 6396 of July 4, 2025) to withdraw the previous notification (Gazette Notification 5997 of 17 March 2025). The names of certain areas that still fall under the area management area (DMA) were omitted. We apologize for any confusion that is caused and ask all stakeholders to become acquainted with the following areas that are explained to be part of the KwaZulu-Natal DMA:

(i) the entire Big Five Hlabisa local municipality;

(ii) the entire local municipality of Mtubatuba;
