The Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Center, promises an ultramodern visitor experience will be unveiled in the breathtaking landscapes of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park.
This R120 million investment is financed by the European Union through the South African national treasury. The launch, planned for June 22, is a milestone moment for the Ministry of Tourism, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and The Milieu (DFLE), South African National Parks (Sanparks) and the Free State Provincial Government.
Under the theme ‘A Nation works for everyone – our past from the beginning, building our future’, the new center offers a compelling celebration of the old story of Africa, where one of the world’s oldest well -known dinosaurusembryos ever discovered. With interactive exhibitions that combine paleontology, archeology, geology and cultural heritage, the center promises to awaken curiosity and pleasure in every visitor – young and old.
Basotho people and their ancestors inhabited and explored this eastern free state landscape for hundreds of years. Through their deep bond with the country, early Basotho communities discovered fossil bones and footprints of unknown creatures. They imagined that these bones and footprints belonged to a mythical beast, “kgodumodomo” and created stories about those who still appear in Basotho Mythology today.
“This center is a symbol of what we mean when we say, Come and find your joy in South Africa,“Said Patricia De Lille Minister of Tourism.” Whether your joy will be fueled by science, nature, culture or connection, the KGODUMODUMO Dinosaur Interpretation Center is an experience that brings it all together in a way that is rooted locally and is inspiring worldwide. “
The launch of the KGODUMODUMO Dinosaur Interpretation Center will include graduating newly trained local tourist guides, proof of the role of the project in empowering young people, women and rural communities through skills development, job creation and economic growth guided by tourism.
