Minister Commends Joint Operation Against Abalone Poaching in Eastern Cape

In a significant victory against environmental crime, a joint law enforcement operation in the Eastern Cape led to the arrest of three male suspects, aged 27, 28, and 32, for illegal abalone possession. The operation, conducted in the early hours of Wednesday, was a collaborative effort involving the Gonubie South African Police Service (SAPS), the East London Dog Unit, and the Green Scorpions. The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr. Dion George, praised the operation, emphasizing its role in combating the illegal harvesting and trade of marine resources.

Details of the Operation

The operation was launched following intelligence received about illegal diving activities at German Bay Beach. According to police spokesperson Captain Hazel Mqala, surveillance began at 10 p.m. on Tuesday. At approximately 3:30 a.m., authorities observed four men emerging from the sea carrying bags.

“When the suspects noticed the law enforcement presence, they dropped the bags and attempted to flee back into the water,” Mqala reported. “Three of the suspects were successfully apprehended, while the fourth escaped.”
Upon inspection, the recovered bags contained 693 abalone, with an estimated street value of R200,000. The seizure highlights the scale of the illegal trade and the determination of law enforcement to disrupt it.

Ministerial Praise and Warnings

Minister Dion George commended the diligence of the law enforcement teams involved, underscoring the importance of their collaborative efforts. “This successful operation demonstrates the effectiveness of collaborative law enforcement efforts in combating the illegal harvesting and trade of our marine resources,” he said. “Abalone poaching poses a severe threat to the sustainability of our marine ecosystems and undermines the livelihoods of communities that depend on these resources.”

George issued a stern warning to those involved in such activities, emphasizing the government’s unwavering stance against environmental crimes. “The arrest of these suspects sends a clear message that such illegal activities will not be tolerated, and those responsible will face the full might of the law,” he stated.

Ongoing Efforts and Commitment

The Minister also acknowledged the ongoing surveillance and enforcement efforts by SAPS and their partners. “I am encouraged by the swift action taken by SAPS and their partners, as well as their commitment to ongoing surveillance and enforcement,” he noted.

Reaffirming the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment’s dedication, George added, “As the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, I remain committed to supporting initiatives that protect our natural heritage and ensure the sustainable use of our marine resources.”

A Call for Community Support

Recognizing the broader challenge of abalone poaching, George urged communities to play an active role in protecting South Africa’s marine ecosystems. “I urge communities to continue working with law enforcement by providing information that can help curb these illegal activities. Together, we can safeguard our environment for future generations,” he said.
