Three recent milestones illustrate how the UFS sets new benchmarks for excellence in higher education and for maximum social impact.
A surgical revolution: launching the Versius robot surgery system
In a groundbreaking step for both South Africa and the African continent, the UFS Faculty of Health Sciences, together with the Free State Department of Health, launched Versius’s surgical robot system -the first of its kind in South Africa.
The system can be summarized if Precision of the human innovation meeting machine. Due to the compact, modular design of the robot system, it fits seamlessly into operating rooms, making robot surgery accessible to more hospitals, both private and public. The introduction of the Versius system marks a huge leap towards shaping the future of surgery and patient care. There are already nine successful robot-supported operations-included complex procedures such as radical prostatectomy-filled in the Universitas Academic Hospital in Bloemfontein. The results are overwhelmingly positive: smaller incisions, less pain, faster recovery and fewer complications.
The prime minister of the free state, Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, is of the opinion that it further positions the free state as a leader in innovation in health care in South Africa. According to Prof. Hester C. Klopper, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UFS, it is “a UFS investment in the well-being of our communities and an essential step towards bridging the health gap in the region”.
Bridging the gap between classroom and courtroom
Innovation at the UFS does not stop at medical boundaries; It is brave again. Earlier this year, the UFS Faculty of Rights, in collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the free state, launched the transforming In the shadow of the public prosecutor program.
With this unique work-integrated learning initiative, students of the third and final year can gain invaluable hands-on courtroom experience under the mentoring of seasoned prosecutors. The program runs more than five years and aims to bridge the often cited gap between the legal theory and the practice of the practice.
Originally presented by students of the Black Lawyers Association, the program is a proud example of student -driven innovation and the responsiveness of the university on social needs. It embodies the emphasis of the UFS on work-integrated learning that enables students to connect academic knowledge with professional application that confirms the dedication of the university to producing branch-ready students. Lawyer Shamama Batohi, national director of the disclosures, praised the program as ‘a model for legal education in South Africa’.
Platinum status for financial administration
In another important achievement, the UFS received the Platinatus accreditation for financial administration by the Good Financial Grant Practice (GFGP) of the Global Grant community, making it the only university in South Africa that made this prestigious distinction.
Platinum status is no ordinary award. It indicates full compliance with the highest worldwide standards for financial management, operational excellence and ethical leadership. It also underlines the reliability of the university in the management of donor funds, research grants and other vital agents with transparency and integrity.
This accreditation confirms the status of the UFS as a trusted partner for large state and philanthropic financiers worldwide. It is proof of the dedication of the university for operational excellence, continuous improvement and financial sustainability in the long term.
