A significant increase in traffic volumes is anticipated during the Easter weekend and the Mpumalanga premier, Mandla Ndlovu, has called for intensified road safety measures to prevent road accidents.
Ndlovu said most accidents are a direct result of the violation of traffic rules and regulations, and the province has adopted a zero-tolerance policy to such behaviour in order to reduce fatalities.
“Research studies provide evidence of a correlation between most car crashes and the violation of traffic rules. These include driving while intoxicated and non-roadworthy vehicles being operated. We will not tolerate such behaviour,” he said.

He said the 2025 Easter Season Road Safety Campaign is a direct response to ongoing efforts to intensify traffic management measures.
This campaign is aimed at reducing road crashes and enhancing safety measures on the roads, while promoting a collaborative approach to road safety by various stakeholders, including law enforcement agencies and road users.
“We urge all road users on a visit to our province to adhere to the traffic rules. We urge them to rest at intervals to prevent fatigue on the road. We must all arrive alive to our destinations,” Ndlovu said.
