The Matriculantia of the Kagisho -Medical School were admitted to the hospital on Sunday after they had fallen ill while attending a Matric Studiekamp during the weekend.
Pupils complained about stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, fever and vomiting.
The cause of the disease is being investigated.
“These students, between 18 and 20 years old, were fired and are in good health. The provincial government of the free state is expanding its gratitude to the devoted professionals who have managed this incident with professionalism and compassion,” the department said in a statement.
“The educators of the Kagisho Secondary School played a crucial role in offering emotional support to the students during this painful time, so that they felt safe and cared for, especially because not all students had parents in the hospitals.”
This is the first major outbreak of food this year, after a series of outbreaks in 2024 that claimed the lives of more than 20 children.
