Limpopo lays to rest soldier killed in DRC | Review

LIMPOPO – At the Khubvi Sports Ground during the funeral ceremony for fallen SANDF soldier Corporal Rinae Nemavhulani held on Saturday, the MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET), Tshitereke Matibe, expressed his heartfelt condolences and unwavering support. “We are here to stand with you as you mourn the loss of your beloved son, who served bravely in the South African National Defence Force,” said Matibe as he addressed the grieving community.

Matibe was joined by Vhembe Mayor Freda Nkondo, Thulamela Mayor Athongozwidivha Rambuda and several senior SANDF members as he addressed mourners.

Fourteen SANDF troops recently lost their lives at the hands of the M23 rebel group in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) when fighting escalated in the Goma region of North Kivu province, leading to the capture of Sake and Goma. The intense clashes between the rebels and the Congolese armed forces resulted in the deaths of soldiers between January 23-27 during the M23’s advance. These soldiers were serving as part of the Southern African Development Community Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC) and the United Nations mission (Monusco), both of which work to restore peace, security, and stability in Africa’s second-largest country.

“In this moment of sorrow, we want you to know that the entire province shares in your grief,” Matibe stated. “We are profoundly saddened by the loss of eight of our own from Limpopo among the 14 fallen soldiers. These brave men exemplified the spirit of service and sacrifice, embodying the values our province holds dear. Their courage and dedication to protecting our nation will never be forgotten.”

He went on to say that as mourners gathered in Khubvi Graveyard, the community collectively acknowledged the loss suffered with the passing of their beloved sons in the DRC. According to Matibe, Limpopo understands the weight of this sacrifice. “Their sacrifice in the pursuit of peace and stability on our continent is an honour that we must recognise and celebrate,” he added.

“Your son, as a guardian of peace, stood at the forefront of this mission. He was not just a defender of our homeland, but a beacon of hope and resilience for those affected by war. His selfless contributions, especially during our struggle for liberation, continue to inspire us and remind us of the noble purpose behind his sacrifice,” he further remarked.

Family member William Matamela expressed deep sorrow over the loss, saying that his young relative had a promising future ahead. The traditional leader of Khubvi village, Vhamusanda Thinawanga Randima, also paid tribute to Corporal Nemavhulani, stating that the death of even one community member is too many.
