Farm ‘sold expired food for years’

Inside the warehouse a pungent smell hung in the air. The dirty floor was covered with plastic wrappings, flour and yoghurt.

Inside the fridges were expired juice and sour milk, rotten meat as well as other meat products and more cheese. A walk-in fridge was filled with yoghurt that was past its expiry date. There were also expired canned products.

In other parts of the warehouse were baby milk, rice and flour that had also expired. There were also machines used to vacuum seal the plastic packaging, scales, and stickers for new expiry dates as well as pricing machines.

According to the employee, Grobelar, 30, took over the business after his father died in 2021.

The man, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he did not know which shops Grobler was selling the expired food to.

“When I got here years ago, I found them doing the very same thing I am doing, repacking and selling these kinds of [expired] foods. He took over the business from his father.”

The employee said Grobler would go to the warehouses of big retail stores and get the food that health inspectors would have found unsuitable for human consumption.
