For the first time this year, Midmar Dam in Howick has reached overflowing levels, offering motorists on the N3 and R103 a spectacular view of water spilling over its edges.
Due to the recent heavy rainfall, the dam’s level is at around 100,5%, a slight decrease compared with 101,4% at this time last year.

The province recorded over 200mm of rainfall last week. This deluge has significantly bolstered water storage levels across the region, filling critical reservoirs.
According to the Department of Water and Sanitation, KwaZulu-Natal’s dam levels have surged from 81,0% to 91,2% in the past week, with similar increases reported in Mpumalanga. Nationally, dam storage levels rose from 74,5% to 79,8%, marking a significant improvement in water security.
Department spokesperson Wisane Mavasa said the recent rainfall has significantly improved surface water storage levels in dams.
“Recent rainfall has significantly improved surface water storage levels in the country’s dams, with 79,8% this week, a huge increase compared with last week’s 74,5%. Although the heavy and disruptive rainfall has resulted in localised flooding in those provinces, it has also boosted the water supply systems significantly,” said Mavasa.
While the improved water levels are a welcome relief, the department has reminded citizens to continue using water sparingly and to avoid complacency. The department also warned residents to steer clear of rivers, lakes, and dams, particularly in low-lying areas prone to flooding.
The overflowing Midmar Dam has added a dramatic touch to the already popular Howick Falls, which is now a roaring cascade of water.
