Three men fatally shot in Piet Retief during alleged taxi conflicts | Highvelder News

EMKHONDO – Three men were fatally shot on January 9 on the R543 (De Wet Road) in Piet Retief, in what is believed to be linked to ongoing taxi conflicts.

Following the shooting, the police quickly responded with the assistance of various stakeholders, leading to the apprehension of three individuals in Chrissiesmeer, who are now being questioned.

The suspects were driving a white Volkswagen Polo and four firearms were recoved from it.

At this stage, the exact motive behind the shooting remains unclear.In response, a dedicated investigation team has been established to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The police stated they are grateful for the collaboration, swift response and support that were displayed by all stakeholders in this incident, including Polsec, private security firms, farmers, other law enforcement agencies, as well as community members in general.

The acting provincial commissioner Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, has strongly condemned the violence, urging the public to seek peaceful and amicable solutions to disputes rather than resorting to violence.

The suspects, facing charges of three counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and robbery with a firearm, are expected to appear in the Piet Retief Magistrate’s court on January 13.
