JOHANNESBURG – The increase in the number of matriculants from poor communities who have received bachelor’s passes is an encouraging sign that those with fewer resources are still being served by the education system.
This is according to Professor Nadine Peterson of the University of Johannesburg, who praised the success of those facing insurmountable challenges.

Of the 47.8% of 2024 matrics eligible to attend university, about 70% of students come from lower-income areas, Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube announced on Monday evening.
“Despite great difficulties and with great social support, they entered the system, continue to succeed in the system and obtain their first degree, because that is an indicator that the education system, from primary to higher education, is serving the needs of the poorest people in this country.”
