The Special Action Committee for Education (SAC) says they are disappointed that their case against the Western Cape Department of Education has been struck off the court role.

The committee applied for an urgent interdict to restrain the provincial department from cutting more than 2400 teaching posts.

In August last year, the department issued a circular citing a budget shortfall of over R 3 billion, putting thousands of posts in jeopardy.

Spokesperson for SAC, Nadeem Hendricks says the court’s decision will have severe consequences on learners.

Hendricks says, “The decision is catastrophic for the schools and the community, and the right of the learners for quality education.”

“ It is especially devastating for the schools in the impoverished and crime-ridden areas where the effects will be felt very deeply.”

He adds, “Cutting of educators will lead to overcrowding of classrooms with classrooms now having to accommodate of 40 to 65 learners per class and in some cases double medium in one class.”
