Over 500 suspected drunk drivers arrested in Mpumalanga holiday crackdown

Traffic officers arrested 530 people in Mpumalanga on suspicion of drunk driving since the start of December according to provincial authorities.

The arrests were made during a series of operations led by traffic law enforcement and South African Police Service (SAPS) officials.

Mpumalanga’s MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, commended law enforcement for their efforts, which he said had contributed to reducing fatal road crashes.

“We should not only end up with arresting errant and drunk drivers on the road. They must also be punished so that our road safety messages are taken to heart by all. Drinking alcohol before taking to the road has left many families and communities distraught as they had to deal with deadly consequences of subsequent road crashes,” Macie stated.

Macie also urged the public to report reckless and intoxicated drivers.

Since the start of the festive season, traffic law enforcement officers in Mpumalanga have stopped approximately 105,000 vehicles.

Of these, over 35 000 heavy motor vehicles have been checked at various weighbridges.

“So far 18 235 summonses were issued to motorists for various offences, mostly moving traffic violations,” said the provincial Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson , Moeti Mmusi.

Macie urged revellers to celebrate responsibly, avoiding public drinking and road blockades to those who will be welcoming the new year.

“Organisers of cross over events must work closely with law enforcement agencies to secure their events ,” he added.

He also called on law enforcement officials to maintain their vigilance, emphasising the importance of protecting citizens throughout the festive season and beyond.
