Voting is underway in the by-election at the dissolved Thabazimbi Local Municipality, in Limpopo.
More than 51 000 registered voters are registered to cast their votes at 57 voting stations.
Twelve wards became vacant when the council was dissolved in October following years of political instability.
Voting started smoothly with only a few people making their way to cast their votes at Northam township.
Jan Venter who just voted says he wants his vote to bring back stability at the municipality.
“It is necessary to vote for the correct party so things must be happen now, it’s now for a long time that Northam is going back ward. I think we must vote for the right party put your feelings away one side and we must work together. I think there must be one party, you can see with a coalition there is always problems.”
