Transport Minister Barbara Creey has ordered the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to investigate the cause of the horrific crash that killed ten people on the N1 highway in the Free State and submit a preliminary report within 48 hours.
The accident happened on Sunday morning, December 8.
TEN KILLED ON THE N1 HIGHWAY IN FREE STATE
According to the Ministry of Transport, a minibus taxi collided with a truck. The incident took place approximately 20 km from Koppies on the N1, towards Kroonstad. Only two people survived; one of the taxi and the truck driver.
The road had to be closed as emergency services personnel had to remove the bodies from the wreckage.
Following the incident, the Minister of Transport expressed her condolences to the relatives and loved ones of those who died.
Creecy also wished the person who sustained serious injuries to have a speedy and full recovery.
Creecy and her deputy Mkhuleko Hlengwa also stressed that this accident occurred following the recent launch of the Holiday Road Safety Campaign, which means the need for law enforcement officers to deploy en masse to calm traffic, especially in identified hotspots. where N1 is one of those places.
