ActionSA in the Free State say Prime Minister Maqueen LetsohaMathae must be held responsible for the appointment Jabu Mbalula as acting Prime Minister, despite reports that he is insolvent and under debt administration.

Says the party TThe appointment may be illegal because persons declared insolvent are barred from holding public office.

ActionSA has called Mbalulas immediate removal.

The provincial chairman of the party, Patricia Kopane, says the Prime Minister must explain why a proper background check was not carried out during the appointment Mbalula.

“The director general of the province, who is responsible for overseeing the proper functioning of the province, must conduct thorough background checks and vetting. So one wonders: how can such a person be appointed to office, knowing his financial position. It’s really embarrassing to see what’s happening.”

Meanwhile, Letsoha-Mathae and her husband Lawrence Mathae are under scrutiny over a R269-million road construction project.

In October, a leaked WhatsApp message from Patrick Phuti, CEO of contractor New Beginnings, claimed they had taken millions in bribes.

The tender was terminated due to irregularities and the contractor’s business rescue status.
