Thunderstorm and heatwave warning for KZN

Sihle Dlamini from the South African Weather Service says these conditions are typical for the country at this time of year.

“At high temperatures the atmosphere becomes unstable, and an unstable atmosphere is an ingredient for thunderstorms.”

A heatwave is currently sweeping through most parts of KZN, especially along the coast and in the western and northern parts of the province.

This is expected to last until Tuesday.

“I advise people to stay cool and hydrated if possible, reduce heat exposure, wear protective clothing and apply sunscreen.”

Dlamini says there is a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms for Monday and Tuesday.

“We expect the storm to bring heavy rain and excessive lightning. We expect this warning over southern Estcourt, Mooirivier, some parts of Pietermaritzburg and southern Durban.”
