Nine undocumented foreign nationals have been arrested in Kimberley after the provincial government raided spaza shops in the city.
The provincial police commissioner in collaboration with various departments in the province executed compliance inspections focusing on illicit and expired food stuffs sold at tuckshops in Galeshewe, Kimberley and Roodepan areas.

Thirty three spaza shops were inspected and 26 were closed down due to non-compliance, operating without valid licences and unhygienic reasons.
Provincial Police spokesperson, Mashay Gamieldien elaborates, “In total 33 tuck-shops were inspected of which only seven were found compliant. While 26 were closed down due to non-compliance, operating without valid licenses and unhygienic reasons.
Large amounts of foodstuff and other items were confiscated including expired food, damaged tin food and rotten vegetables. Nine undocumented persons were detained and one arrest for riotous behavior, with three fines issued. An urgent plea is made to the residents of the province to avoid buying food items that are dented, cracked. Check expiry dates on the package”
