According to the MyBroadband Mobile Network Quality Report for Q3 2024, MTN has been recognised as having the best overall network in South Africa. This recognition, alongside the prestigious “Best In Test” certification awarded to MTN by umlaut, an independent global benchmarking organisation, highlights MTN’s ongoing commitment to delivering top-tier connectivity and continuously improving network quality across the country.
The successful deployment of advanced network infrastructure in Umkhanyakude District, KwaZulu-Natal, is an excellent example of this commitment. We are significantly improving connectivity while addressing critical community concerns, like car theft, so that 600,000 people in this area can enjoy the benefits of the connected world while knowing that action is being taken to address their everyday needs and concerns.
Until now, residents and law enforcement have lacked advanced technology and network deployment. This changes today, as tracking, reporting, and policing are enhanced through the new digital channels. MTN’s network deployment supports implementing advanced vehicle tracking systems, real-time alerts, and enhanced coordination with local law enforcement to improve response times and recovery rates.
We are pleased to report that 8 LTE towers have been deployed in the district this financial year.

The network deployment is part of MTN’s broader commitment to investing in South Africa’s digital infrastructure and supporting local communities. This initiative aligns with MTN’s mission to drive digital inclusion and contribute to the socio-economic development of the regions it serves.
“We have deployed over 45 towers across the province this financial year; our ambition is to end the year with a total network availability of 98%. Some areas, such as Inanda, Kwamashu, Umlazi, Gamalakhe and Richards Bay, have benefited this year with added capacity and improved customer experience. We aim to connect even more areas in 2025. Our LTE coverage is now covering a population of 92,5% while 5G has an impressive 42.5% population coverage,” says Dlamini.
