The students of Daluvuyo Primary School reportedly ate snacks from the local spaza shop.
Free State Health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi said only three children remained in hospital.
“We can confirm that 49 children have been admitted and seen at Bongani Hospital, and three of these children continue to be admitted as they showed more severe signs of diarrhoea.
“They were admitted for further observation. They showed symptoms of itchy skin and rashes on their skin after reportedly eating some snacks from the nearby shop.”
This is the latest in a series of suspected food poisoning incidents in the Free State, with several incidents also reported in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and Gauteng.
