Matric pupils have been caught with cellphones and crib notes during the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.
The Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube said the incidents are being investigated.
“Although some schools were affected by external factors such as taxi strikes, protest actions, power outages, and adverse weather conditions, all affected students were able to write their exams through implemented contingency measures,” she said.

Two imposters were arrested for attempting to write exams on behalf of registered candidates.
Additionally, one candidate was unable to complete an exam after being arrested in connection with an armed robbery case.
Gwarube addressed learner safety, adding that were ongoing efforts to protect pupils across the country. She said new security protocols and collaborations with law enforcement are in place to ensure that pupils can focus on their exams without concern for their personal safety.
In the Eastern Cape, five learners in eMqhekezweni were recently assaulted. Gwarube said the incident occurred at a residence near the school, not on school grounds.
She also said that the department was not aware of whether or not the perpetrator was a staff member.
The minister confirmed that the case is receiving attention at cabinet level and is being investigated.

She affirmed the department’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the exams through comprehensive measures aimed at fairness, consistency, and a supportive environment for all learners.
The minister wished matrics well and reiterated the department’s commitment to their success.
