Matric Exams: WC students caught with cell phones and calculators

As the 2024 matric exams reach their midpoint, the Western Cape Education Department has expressed satisfaction with the progress, reporting that exams are running smoothly without significant disruptions, Cape {town} Etc reports.

Beginning on 21 October, the matric exams have seen substantial public support. Officials have extended thanks to the community, encouraging everyone in the province to continue supporting students through the remainder of their exams.

Despite no reported incidents of exam paper leaks, students are reminded to stay vigilant and report any information they may receive about potential leaks. Ensuring the integrity of the exams is paramount, and students play a critical role in maintaining that standard.

However, invigilators have reported nine cases of students bringing prohibited items, such as cell phones or crib notes, into exam venues.

These items are strictly forbidden, and students are advised to thoroughly check their pockets before entering the exam room. ‘Forgetting’ to remove these items is not considered an acceptable excuse.

Ahead of the exams, all matric candidates signed a commitment agreement, co-signed by a parent or guardian, outlining exam rules and the consequences for misconduct.

This agreement underscores that students and their families understand the regulations and the seriousness of breaches.

As students prepare for the final stretch, the department also acknowledges the pressures of the exam period and encourages those struggling with anxiety to seek support. Students are invited to reach out to teachers or contact the Safe Schools Call Centre at 0800 45 46 47 for help.

‘We are so proud of how hard our matrics have worked,’ a department spokesperson said. ‘We wish them the best for the remaining exams and look forward to celebrating their results in January.’
