It has proposed a closing time of 12 am.
The provincial police revealed to Jacaranda FM News that the amendment of the Limpopo liquor regulations is still ongoing.
In an address, the police’s Major General Jan Scheepers described the move as part of a commitment to confronting the province’s significant challenges, particularly those related to licensed liquor establishments.
“As we explore this issue, we must confront a troubling reality: alcohol is the leading contributor to various crimes in Limpopo. The statistics are alarming, rapes, assaults, murders, domestic violence, child abuse, road fatalities, and attempted murders are frequently linked to alcohol consumption, both within and outside licensed venues.”
Limpopo SAPS spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba said managing individuals heading home in the early morning hours is challenging, as it coincides with other crimes like house break-ins.
“As communities, we must advocate for safe drinking and promote awareness of when to stop or safely return home. Our focus should, therefore, be so focused on generating revenue but rather on ensuring the wellbeing, safety and security of our communities,” said Mashaba.
The Department of Social Development states that alcohol is the third-largest cause of death and disability in South Africa, after STIs and violence.
