IEC Limpopo says all systems go for Thabazimbi by-elections

Wednesday’s by-elections will take place in all 12 municipal wards.

Over 400 candidates from 21 political parties are contesting for 24 seats in the council, including five independent candidates.

The municipality was placed under administration in September following years of instability since the 2021 elections.

Limpopo IEC Chairperson Nkaro Mateta said over 51,000 residents have registered to vote.

“The municipality’s population is approximately 64,993 citizens with 51,399 registered voters.

“Among the registered voters, over 20,000 females are registered, while close to 30,000 males are registered. Significantly, more than 1,300 new voters aged 18 to 19 who did not participate in the 2024 general elections are registered.

“A total of 405 candidates comprising five independent candidates and 400 political party candidates will contest the forthcoming by-elections. Of these, 214 are male candidates, and 191 are female” she said.

The contesting parties include the ANC, EFF, DA, PA, MK Party, FF Plus, ATM, UDM, PAC, IFP, AIC, Thabazimbi Forum For Service Delivery and Thabazimbi Residents Association.
