JOHANNESBURG – The Free State Ministry of Health says only one child remains in hospital after a group of schoolchildren were treated for suspected food poisoning.
Just over 100 schoolchildren were treated for stomach cramps at various local health facilities in individual districts this week.
More similar cases have been reported across the country in recent months, raising safety concerns.

Free State Ministry of Health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi:
“Fortunately, there has been no death, and we are not hoping for one, but we remain vigilant as we have asked our school health teams to be activated, and multidisciplinary teams and intergovernmental relations to work together so that we can prevent any possible contamination of the virus curb. food services that could lead to many more people becoming ill.”
Meanwhile, the Free State Ministry of Education has called on schools in the province to keep a close eye on food vendors.
“We also encourage schools to closely monitor the vendors operating in and around the schools so that we can curb these incidents as they are so dangerous and pose such a threat to society.”
