The Free State Education Department says it will this week introduce strict rules to regulate food vendors at schools in the province.
This follows food poisoning incidents that affected more than 100 students in the province between Wednesday and Friday.

Department spokesperson Howard Ndaba says schools must include food safety in the curriculum.
“We have suspended supplier operations in and around school buildings to allow for investigation and coordination of health and safety compliance. Biscuit shops and vendors owned by schools and operating under strict supervision as approved by the SGBs are exempt. Schools are urged to educate students about the importance of food safety. Schools must prepare detailed lists of all authorized vendors operating in or near school buildings. These lists should be submitted to environmental health inspectors,” Ndaba added.
