Limpopo Police have arrested 11 suspects in Praktiseer, outside Burgersfort for alleged extortion at a local mine.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says that the local business forum allegedly threatened to close and disrupt mining activities if the mine doesn’t give them tenders and meet their other demands.

Colonel Ledwaba says the suspects were arrested when they were trying to blockade the mine entrance.

“Following other engagement between the mine and the business forum, the two parties did not agree on some of the terms, including a demand to be given mine tenders.

The forum members allegedly threatened to close and disrupt the mining activities on 15th of November 2024, if the mine does not meet their demands on Friday the 15th of November 2024 at around 12, the 11 members attached to the Business Forum gathered at the mine gate, and they were immediately arrested. They are going to appear in the magistrate court, on Monday 18th of November, 2024.”
