Samwu in the Free State tells municipalities to take action

The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) in the Free State has called for decisive action against municipal administrators whose municipalities have defaulted on contributions to pension funds.

The union said the recent Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) report found 13 of the Free State’s 27 rural councils were in default.

“This is a clear and shameful indication of mismanagement, reflecting a complete disregard for the well-being of municipal employees,” the union said in a statement on Tuesday.

The reckless neglect of duty not only undermined the financial security of municipal employees, but also directly jeopardized their ability to access much-needed assistance in times of crisis.

The union said thousands of its members were unable to withdraw from the ‘two-pot system’, depriving them of the temporary financial assistance that many desperately need.
