Delmas raceway delivers a splendid day of Regional Festival racing
Red Star Raceway hosted a buzzing day of Gauteng Regional Festival racing on Saturday. The Mobil 1 V8 Supercars, BMW M Performance Parts Racing Series, PABAR VW Challenge, and DOE Formula Vee partnered with CIM Lubri Fuel Regional Festival and Ferro Energia 111s racing with Superhatch delivered some memorable motor action on the outskirts of Delmas.
Championship leader Julian Fameliaris had to do with only fourth in the opening Mobil 1 V8 Supercars race. Warren Lombard came out fighting in his Mustang to beat Thomas Reib’s Lumina and GT2 winner Auke Compaan. Fameliaris’ Corvette and teammate Franco di Matteo’s Jaguar were however right back in control for race 2. They led Lombard, Reib, Compaan and Steve Herbst. Lombard however did enough to take the day overall from Reib and Fameliaris.
The PABAR VW Challenge races delivered surprise results as the championship leaders endured days to forget. Bevin pipped brother Wayne Masters and Dean Ross to the post in the opening race, while Mo Karodia overhauled Shiren Rajpaul to win Class B with leader Stuart Mack only fourth. Co-leader Christopher Tait went home after a first race retirement as Kyle Petersen took the Class C win from Adriaan de Beer. Wayne turned the Table on Bevin in heat 2 as Rajpaul did the same to Karodia, although Mack did enough to clinch the class title, while Andy Gossman took C from Mitch Coetzee.
Class A man Leon Loubser took the opening BMW M Performance Parts Racing Series heat from Class B leaders Renier Smith, Andreas Meier and Nek Makris. Gary Martins surprised the Class C regulars to win over Bennie Luyt and Rob Gearing. Loubser had it all his own way again in race 2 as he led B top three Smith from Makris and Meier. Gearing topped C from Luyt and Hein van der Merwe. Classes D and E raced alone. Nicholas Herbst won D from Johan Miller and Cobus Bohmer, and Matthew Wadeley E win from Mike Grobler and Strati Yiannakis. Shane Grobler won race 2 from Herbst and Bohmer, while Mike Grobler took the E win from Justin Brown and Mike Emmenis.
Title rivals, Lendl Jansen consolidated his DOE Formula Vee partnered with CIM Lubri Fuel advantage over Peter Hills with the race 1 win. Kyle Watt followed in third from Brandon Hills, Theodore Vermaak and Vaughn Hills. The second race delivered the same top three but Gert van den Berg popped up in fourth from Brandon and Vaughn Hills and Richard Carr as Jansen laid one hand on another championship win.
GT winner Dawie Olivier continued on his winning ways in the Ferro Energia 111 GT Sports and Saloons racing with Superhatch. He put one over Class A top four, Wayne Robb’s Focus, Craig Priestly, Melanie Spurr’s Golf and Piet Potgieter. Jonathan Visser won Class B, Wouter Roos’ Polo C and Rob Clark’s Ballade Class D, as George Aldrich’s Corsa took Superhatch. The second heat delivered a photostat copy of the first race results.
The 2024 Regional Festival roadshow will conclude at Zwartkops in Pretoria on Saturday 16 November. By the end of which all this year’s Gauteng Northern Regions circuit racing champions will be crowned.
