JOHANNESBURG – Police have arrested over 10,000 suspects during last week’s nationwide crime prevention effort, Operation Shanela.
The arrests were made between Monday and Sunday, last week.
Of the 10,668 suspects taken into custody, more than 1,900 were wanted for serious crimes, including murder, attempted murder, rape, and assault.
Police spokesperson, Amanda van Wyk, said that the service would intensify these operations to ensure the safety of all South Africans.
“Two-hundred-and-thirty-six drug dealers were also arrested during this period, along with 593 drivers for drinking and driving, of which 173 of them in Gauteng.”
Van Wyk also confirmed that police rescued 29 human trafficking victims in Gauteng during the operations.
