The Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation (DCSR) said it was proud of the successful hosting of the highly anticipated rugby match between the Springboks and Argentina. In a statement on Tuesday, October 1, the DCSR said this significant event, held at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, September 28, marks a major achievement in the ongoing commitment to promote sports and recreation as a catalyst for social cohesion and economic activity.

It said the match drew thousands of enthusiastic fans from across the country, generating substantial revenue for the city and surrounding areas. Local businesses, hotels, restaurants, fuel stations and shops experienced a notable increase in patronage, showcasing the positive economic impact of hosting high-profile sporting events.
“We are delighted to have been part of this historic sporting event. We could not have prayed for a more successful weekend,” said the MEC for culture, sports and recreation, Leah Mabuza. “Our capital city was abuzz, and the atmosphere inside the stadium and the results of the game all came together to make this a memorable experience for the fans. A few milestones were also reached by our players, making this a special match for the Boks.”

She said beyond the economic benefits, the match fostered community spirit and pride, bringing together diverse groups of fans in celebration of national sports.
