Mbalula brushes off ‘speculation’ regarding outcome of NWC meeting with Lesufi

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula says the party’s National Working Committee has noted the speculation in the media regarding the correspondence sent to their Gauteng chairperson Panyaza Lesufi, saying he was called in to clarify his utterances made in the media about the government of national unity and metros in Gauteng.

Mbalula says they condemn all disinformation aimed at projecting the ANC in a negative light.

Sources indicated that Mbalula supported the notion that Lesufi should be reprimanded for his comments.

This follows Lesufi’s response to Democratic Alliance federal chairperson Helen Zille on X, where he said the ANC would not be dictated to by the DA.

Zille had accused Lesufi of defying national directives and acting independently in the province, following the removal of the DA’s Cilliers Brink as mayor of Tshwane.

While briefing the media today on the outcomes of the ANC NWC meeting, Mbalula said Lesufi presented himself to the committee and he provided an explanation regarding his utterances, and it was accepted by the officials.

Mbalula says Lesufi was called into an engagement with the party officials, not a hearing, adding that officials of the ANC are not a disciplinary committee.

He says Lesufi’s utterance were misinterpreted and taken out of context as his positions on issues of GNU are in line with the ANC NWC.
