Heavy thunderstorms leave motorists stranded
Heavy thunderstorms caused extensive damage in Johannesburg, leaving several motorists stranded in flooded areas on Tuesday afternoon. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of further thunderstorms in five provinces and urged residents and motorists to remain cautious. As the storm season intensifies, the focus is now shifting to managing weather-related risks and preventing further incidents.
Storm hits Johannesburg, leaving motorists stranded
Shortly after 4pm on Tuesday, Johannesburg experienced a severe thunderstorm that caused significant disruptions in several parts of the city. Heavy rains led to localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas, making driving conditions dangerous.
The Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) responded quickly to multiple emergency calls. In Soweto, ambulance crews sent the Aquatic Rescue Unit to help motorists stuck in water along the flooded Klipspruit Valley Road. Fortunately, no major incidents were reported overnight, but authorities remain on high alert as the weather pattern remains unstable.
South African Weather Service issues thunderstorm warning
The SA Weather Service (SAWS) is predicting more thunderstorms on Wednesday and warned the public of possible risks in five provinces. The areas expected to be affected include:
- Gauteng
- Eastern parts of the Northwest Province
- Extreme northeastern Free State
- Extreme southwestern Limpopo
- Coastal areas between Hout Bay and Plettenberg Bay
The SAWS issued a Level 4 warning on Monday, highlighting the possibility of:
- Heavy rain leading to localized flooding of roads and infrastructure.
- Damage to property caused by strong winds and hail.
- Dangerous driving conditionsespecially in low-lying areas prone to water logging.
Motorists are urged to be careful
Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi has advised motorists to exercise extreme caution. “We still urge our residents to avoid crossing river streams during their daily activities, and motorists should drive cautiously under these conditions,” Mulaudzi said.
He added that EMS teams will continue to monitor all seven regions of Johannesburg for possible emergencies. Although no major incidents were reported overnight, the city’s emergency services remain on site on edge to respond quickly to any further emergencies that may arise from the ongoing weather conditions.
Additional weather warnings for coastal areas
In addition to thunderstorms in the inland provinces, SAWS has also issued a yellow Level 2 warning for wind and waves along South Africa’s southern coastline. The warning highlights the risk of navigation problems at sea, especially for smaller ships and personal watercraft. Coastal residents from Hout Bay to Plettenberg Bay are advised to remain cautious as rough seas and strong winds could cause ships to capsize.
Weather forecasts in Gauteng
For Gauteng, the weather forecast for Wednesday calls for cloudy skies in the morning, becoming partly cloudy and cool to warm during the day. However, residents should remain vigilant as thunderstorms may develop in the afternoon or evening, posing further risks to those commuting or undertaking outdoor activities.
Preparing for the storm season
South Africa’s storm season brings unpredictable and often extreme weather, requiring citizens and authorities to stay prepared. The risk of thunder, hail and flooding underlines the importance of:
- Monitoring weather forecasts and complying with SAWS warnings.
- Avoiding flood-prone areas and river crossings during heavy rainfall.
- Ensure vehicles are roadworthy for wet and hazardous conditions.
- Stay indoors in heavy weather, if possible.
As thunderstorms continue to rip through Johannesburg and surrounding provinces, residents are urged to stay informed and exercise caution. With SAWS warning of further storms in Gauteng, North West, Free State, Limpopo and the southern coastline, preparedness is essential to minimize risks and prevent accidents.
While no serious incidents have yet been reported, the Johannesburg EMS remains vigilant in assisting residents and motorists who find themselves in dangerous situations. As storm season intensifies, staying alert and following weather advisories will be critical to safely navigating the coming weeks.
